Job Summary
Our Ground Engineering team in Chelmsford is seeking Geotechnical Engineers/
Engineering Geologists experienced in providing specialist input to a range of
civil engineering projects such as highways- railways- residential and
commercial developments- harbours- coastal stability- infrastructure and flood
defences. Experience in Ground Investigation- from inception to completion is
required.
To be successful the candidate will have a minimum of three years relevant
experience- be able to demonstrate a clear understanding of the industry with
a proven track record in the delivery of technical projects and be full
conversant with the standards that apply throughout the industry. We ar
looking for an ambitious team player with good basic skills- knowledge an
experience that he/she is now ready to develop into a more senior role. Th
position will suite a person who wishes to assist in the development of
innovative- cost effective and buildable solutions in an environment that is
collaborative- stimulating and demanding.
Office Overview:
Our Ground Engineering team in the UK comprises around 190 staff- providing
one-stop access to a variety of services. The Basingstoke office traditionally
has a diverse range of interesting projects in the UK and overseas and over
nearly 100 years has built a reputation for successfully delivering ground
engineering schemes in the UK and many other countries. We are looking to
enhance and grow this team with individuals with a sound technical ability
design that share our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding
workload.
The team provides services ranging from project management- feasibility
studies- detailed design and construction on a wide range of contracts and
supports other AECOM business lines where their projects have a Ground
Engineering interface. Our clients are from the private and public sector and
our leading UK clients include Highways England- Network Rail- HCA- BP. Shell-
Thames Water- Environment Agency and numerous Local Authorities- as well as
leading contractors and developers.
Projects:
We have an impressive portfolio of major national and international
infrastructure projects including:
Detailed earthworks design and ground modelling for Hinkley Point C Nuclear
Power Station- Earthworks and Preliminary Works Contract.
Riyadh Metro: Design of viaduct foundations and Mechanically Stabilised Walls
Tideway: Input into the permanent design of the tunnel- shafts- retaining
walls- earthworks- marine structures and other assets with soil structure
interaction and damage assessment of third party asset
A130: Remediation of failed highway embankments from design to construction
supervision of the remedial works
Design of the central section of the Thames Tideway Tunnel
High Speed 2 provision of engineering and environmental services
Job Responsibilities:
The appropriate level of technical expertise is required in order that the Job
/ Project Accountabilities listed below can be carried out to the necessary
standard:
Scoping- tendering and administering ground investigations and acting as the
Investigation Supervisor.
Collating- manipulating and interpreting data to provide reliable design
parameters
Design of geotechnical works including slope stability- foundations- retaining
structures- earthworks and ground improvement
You will have strong development skills and the technical ability- knowledge
and competence to provide guidance and teaching to others when required
Ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary design team- to
ensure work packages are delivered on time and within budget
Establishing strong working relationships and ensuring regular liaison with
other internal teams
Be aware of and understand the AECOM Project Management procedures- their
importance and their application to projects- including monthly progress and
budget reviews of projects
Carry out regular design reviews in accordance with the company Quality
Management System
Your responsibilities will include:
Desk studies and walkover surveys.
Ground investigation – scoping- specifying- supervising- logging-
interpretation of GI data- derivation of design parameters and production of
Ground Investigation Reports to EC-7.
Geotechnical design slope stability and earthworks design and the
opportunity to get involved in design of shallow and piled foundations and
retaining walls using a range of software. Where appropriate you will
contribute to Geotechnical Design Reports to EC-7.
You will assist in preparation of bids and proposals and attend meetings with
contractors and clients- both external and internal and work on multi-
disciplinary project design teams. Depending on your interest there is the
option to become involved in the management of projects.
Minimum Requirements
Relevant experience enabling you to have developed a range of relative knowledge and skills.
You will have a working knowledge of UK geology- engineering geology and ground investigation practice.
You will be able to describe soils and rocks- appreciate geomorphological features- record your findings and write clear and concise reports.
You will have used software such as SlopeW- gINT/Holebase and the Rocscience suite and be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel. Knowledge of CAD and geotechnical software such as the Oasys suite and Geo5 and WALLAP would be an advantage.
You will be familiar with the UK Specification for Ground Investigation- the ICC Conditions of Contract and standards including BS5930 and BS1377 and be able to prepare specifications and contract documents.
You should be willing to travel within the UK and overseas for limited periods.
Preferred Qualifications
An MSc in Earth Sciences is essential.
Qualifications that include geotechnical engineering- hydrogeology or other related subjects would be an advantage.
Working towards Chartered status with the Geological Society of London- or CEng with the ICE or IMMM.
